I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. Psalm 40:8
Attending my 50th Fairhaven High School class reunion recently was a grand occasion in more ways than one. The era of the Beatles, the excitement of the Space Age, the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement, the memorable cinematic roles of greats like Marlon Brando and Steve McQueen, as well as the tragic assassination of then President, John F. Kennedy, were revisited. The unveiling of our time-sensitive and creative stained glass window gift to the school was also a special focus. Closer to home, it stirred memories of special relationships and a heartfelt care I still have for those who graduated with me back in 1964.
In today’s message, I’d like to report that not only is our nation’s culture obviously different since then, but a dramatic change has also taken place within me. All we need to do is read the newspaper or watch the news to prove the first point. It speaks for itself. As for my personal change, a reference is needed. Many may recall our class yearbook prophecy section dubbed me as a “future comedian”; the superlatives had me listed as “best school-spirited.” Humbly, I can tell a joke, but I’m far from a comedian. Those who knew me must think it somewhat funny even to read this message. After all, my report cards of flunking grades in English would predict otherwise. Most laugh out loud, perhaps, is how a best school-spirited Blue Devil would come to you after a half century with anything near what I’m about to share…
During our gathering, there was an “open mike time” for each of us to offer a class impression, inspiration, or thought. Even though that opportunity has past, please allow me the privilege to express the deep care I still have for those who graduated with me back in 1964.
On the day we were so proud to wear our caps and gowns, I understand our number was 180. Thirty of our graduates have since died. Except for God, the reality is that those of us remaining will experience a beginning, middle, and end to our time on Earth. At my very core, I’m convinced the most critical decision to be made in life is centered on this fact. More specifically, it is a decision that has everything to do with what unfolds after our last breath is taken.
Family, friends, and my beloved classmates who get to read this, there is only One who truly reigns and deserves honor for being prophetic and superlative. He’s the One who created us with a capacity to laugh. As a matter of fact, scripture says that a merry heart doeth good like a medicine, but a broken spirit drieth the bones. He’s also the best Spirited—because true knowledge, wisdom, understanding, and ongoing encouragement come from Him, our source and Creator!
Until we meet again, from your elected “comedian and best-school spirited,” I wish to share that I celebrate the Lord with a merry heart and offer this hopeful prayer on your behalf….
Dear Heavenly Father,
May Your special caring way touch the heart of each of my classmates of 1964. May they be intimately united with You today and forever. May Your Spirit guide, guard, and govern the transformation they need, as described in Your Years’ Book – The Bible! May they realize in the most comforting way, that through the blood-stained Cross of Christ and the window of eternal hope, You reside for them forever. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
Jer 29:11; Rom 8:28; Psalm 1; Josh 24:15; John 3:16; Gal 3:26
